The potter, Gassan was born and raised in Kyoto. He is a skilled ceramist of Kyo-yaki tableware. He also makes bonsai pots after being interested in bonsai.
This pot is one of his masterpieces known as the "Moon Pot." Can you see the scenery with the moon floating above the mountain range? This isn't painted; everything is expressed though the glaze.
Looking at the back, you can see flowing lines and swirling patterns. These represent water. Gassan has depicted this with the wish that the bonsai never withers.
